JOB DESCRIPTION:


Design, engineer and optimize databases to enable Modelling, Data Mining and Analytics with a strong background in data analysis, database programming skills and ability to drive improvements.



  • Responsibilities include backup and recovery, space monitoring, reorganizations, performance tuning, troubleshooting, database upgrades, object maintenance.

  • Analyst supports development, acceptance, and production databases across the globe, working closely with multiple Infrastructure teams, BLA or EMIT SAP teams.

  • Ongoing production support of existing databases is the primary role.
  • Provide Oracle Database Administration support for Oracle databases versions 8 12c.
  • Requires inclusion in an on-call rotation.
  • Experience with OEM, RMAN, OID, and Unix/Windows server administration is helpful.


Job Responsibilities (Day to Day Activities):


Primary Tasks and Responsibilities:


  • Design, and refactor database tables and views to enable Modeling and Data Mining. Optimize queries. Resolve data integrity issues.
  • Enhance database performance and access control for improved Data Mining ability:
  • Adapt and refine existing data design to accommodate evolving researcher needs
  • Assess tables, views, queries and stored procedure and data relationships to identify optimizations
  • Analyze existing queries for performance issues and implement optimizations
  • Manage database migration from development environment to production environment

  • Monitor performance of all deployed modifications
  • Design and configure database and object security based on functional specifications and researcher needs
  • Develop and deploy stored procedures for data processing:
  • Identify and implement calculations for centralized and efficient implementation within the database
  • Develop Stored procedures that will provide consistent data sets to ALL applications utilizing the database
  • Example conversion of test data to standard units
  • Design Additional Tables and Views as needed for Researcher Efficiencies:

  • Processing of testing equivalencies e.g. multiple test methods for sulfur deemed equivalent
  • Identify and resolve Test data integrity issues:

  • Collaborate with Researchers and Modelers to identify and resolve test discrepancies using ad-hoc queries

  • Deploy Integrity report scripts to validate that all issues remain resolved
  • Misc:

  • Observe company safety guidelines

  • Perform Security & Controls AND Change Management activities as per internal processes
  • Ability to become proficient in domain knowledge rapidly

  • Document all processes and procedures as needed and share findings with peers
  • Work with research staff, and outside vendors as needed to resolve issues, test solutions, and implement fixes
  • Use established ticket tracking system to log requests, monitor progress, summarize problem resolution
  • Support of IT Audit activities

Required Skills:


  • Technical Skills/Experience:

  • A Science degree (Chemistry, Engineering, Biology or similar lab-oriented discipline) with Database Engineering experience, or a Computer Science degree with Scientific/Engineering industry background required.
  • Minimum 10 years of (Oracle & SQL) database engineering, architecture, design, performance tuning and optimization experience.
  • Relevant industry experience similar to primary tasks and responsibilities outlined above.

  • Desired Skills or Experience:
  • Advanced programming skills - MS Visual Studio Basic, Excel VBA macros, TFS.

  • Experience with MS Windows Communication Foundation, Windows Mobile Device Center, .NET Framework, and Windows OS concepts.

Experience with lab instrument hardware and software is a plus (Thermo Fisher, Agilent, Bruker, Varian etc.).
