Group 97 Applied Space Systems
The Applied Space Systems Group develops environmental monitoring electro-optical and infrared sensor systems for detecting and tracking natural and man-made phenomena. The group's activities include the extraction of target and feature information from airborne and spaceborne hyperspectral imagery; system support of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) environmental satellites in performance analysis and improvement of existing sensors and products; architecture definition and sensor development support for the next-generation NOAA satellite systems; and chemical detection sensor and system development. Work includes electro-optical and infrared sensor design, system and architecture analysis, signal processing, data analysis, and algorithm development. The group seeks physicists, astronomers, applied mathematicians, electrical engineers, computer engineers, and candidates with related experience who have an interest in developing cutting-edge space remote sensing technologies for future missions.

The Applied Space Systems Group is seeking a Systems Administrator IV to join existing team members in providing systems administration support services in a dynamic environment. The candidate will have experience in the design of solutions, including provisioning, configuration and management of Windows Server, VMware ESX, RedHat Enterprise Linux, CentOS and Solaris systems on a variety of hardware platforms. They will interface with vendors and procurement to spec, purchase, and maintain hardware, licensing, and warranty information for systems hardware and software. The candidate must be able to communicate with users and leadership in problem assessment and troubleshooting and apply appropriate technical skills or vendor methodologies to resolve issues successfully. The candidate must develop and maintain detailed backup and recovery strategies for multiple platforms

The candidate will receive minimal instructions on recurrent work assignments and only general instructions on new or more complex assignments. The candidate must provide technical support, training and technical documentation to staff members as needed. Candidate possession of an active DoD TOP SECRET clearance is a plus but not a requirement

Skill and Experience

  • In depth experience with provisioning, configuring and administering Windows Server, VMware ESX, RedHat Enterprise Linux, CentOS and Solaris systems on a variety of hardware platforms
  • In depth experience with implementing and maintaining Windows/Linux systems hardening scripts, patching, and updates
  • Experience with Administering NetApp and Dell storage systems
  • Experience with automated security assessments tools
  • Experience with operating system imaging tools
  • General systems administration experience including Kerberos, DNS, DHCP, YUM, Kickstart, Grub, LVM, SeLinux, MySQL and Oracle Database and Apache, Active Directory, LDAP, DHCP, Group Policies, Bash and Command Shell scripting


  • Minimum of 6 years experience in a Systems Administrator or Senior Systems Administrator role.
  • Bachelor s in Computer Science, MIS, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to achieve or maintain CompTIA Security+. Higher certifications like CISSP, or equivalent, is highly desirable.
  • Strong customer service skills, written and communication skills
  • Skill in building consensus among stakeholders and colleagues
